Breaking Free from Akrasia: What If You’re Not Actually “Lazy”?

Dernière mise à jour : 18 juin

Have you ever known exactly what you needed to do… but somehow didn’t do it?Your to-do list is full, your goal is clear, your desire to change is real — and yet, you find yourself frozen on the couch or doing everything except what you intended. This experience has a name: akrasia. And no, it’s not laziness. It’s not a lack of willpower. It’s a very human, very common, and very manageable pattern.

1. What Is Akrasia?

Akrasia is the strange gap between what we want to do and what we actually do.It’s the inner tug-of-war between intention and action.Philosophers like Socrates spoke about it, and in truth, everyone experiences it — even the most organized and motivated among us.

It often looks like:

  • Chronic procrastination

  • Subtle forms of self-sabotage

  • Promises we make to ourselves… and don’t keep

  • That vague tiredness of telling yourself “I’ll do it later” when deep down, you know now is better

2. Why It’s Normal (And Not Your Fault)

Your brain is designed to avoid effort, change, and discomfort.Akrasia is a natural reaction to overwhelm — too many expectations, too much pressure, or fear of failure. It often shows up when one part of you says, “I want to move forward,” and another part whispers, “I don’t feel ready.”

So what if we stopped judging ourselves for it?What if akrasia were a signal to slow down, to listen more closely, and to shift the way we motivate ourselves?

3. Gentle and Practical Ways to Move Forward

Here are some kind and effective strategies to transform akrasia into forward motion — at your own pace:

  • Coaching: It helps clarify goals and create simple, realistic, motivating strategies. We work together on “how to take the next step with what I have right now,” without guilt.

  • Hypnotherapy: A way to unlock inner resistance, reconnect with your energy, and calm the inner conflict that can block action.

  • Micro-actions: Instead of aiming big, start tiny. Tidy one drawer. Open the document. Put on your shoes. Movement invites movement.

  • Active self-kindness: Speak to yourself like you would a dear friend:“You’re struggling today, and that’s okay. What’s one small thing you could do right now?”

You’re Already Doing Your Best

Akrasia is not a flaw. It’s a signal. An invitation to reconcile what you want and what you’re living. And the good news? This can change — with curiosity, kindness, and powerful tools like coaching and hypnosis.

So… maybe start by just taking a breath. And remind yourself:“I’m not alone. I’m moving forward, in my own way.”
